Devotions Off the Map | Book Review

Let God be your Guide as you journey off the map!

God has an amazing plan for your kids’ futures, and these 52 devotions will help them map out their journeys. Weekly reading will take kids through a year of getting to know Jesus—their Guide—and learning how to follow Him, trust Him, and stay focused when their trek gets tough.

Filled with dynamic full-color illustrations, “Mile-Marker Memory Verses,” “On Quest” discussion questions, and “Walk This Way” activities, Devotions Off the Map is sure to have kids excited about getting into Scripture and on the right path—toward Christ!

Why I chose this book…

Every year the children’s ministry director at our church selects a Vacation Bible School (VBS) curriculum from the myriad of choices that are offered. This year our church chose the Journey Off the Map curriculum which is produced by LifeWay. As always, children from our church and the community came together to hear the truth of God’s Word, to play, have fellowship, craft, and worship. For some it was the first time they had heard about Jesus, while for others vacation bible school solidifies what they already know to be true– all those who attended VBS were stirred and excited to know more of God. When VBS ends, it’s like stepping away from a super-charged pep rally for Jesus. Why not seize on the excitement and press deeper into a relationship with God?

My Thoughts…

In what I believe to be a stroke of genius, B&H Kids has produced Devotions Off the Map. Genius (really)? Yes, because now that our children’s hearts are focused on Jesus, while they are excited and receptive to know more of Him…NOW is the time for parents to carry that momentum into a full year of discovery! Devotions Off the Map consists of 52 devotions, scriptures, prayers, discussion questions, and activities aimed at building faith and courage. God has a plan every child (Jeremiah 29:11; Ephesians 2:10), and with His help parents can prepare them for the journey ahead – this devotional is that tool.

Devotions Off the Map is divided into 5 sections:
Prepping for Your Journey – Encourages believers to establish a communication plan (aka prayer), study the map (bible), and protect themselves (armor of God)…
Following Your Guide – Jesus is our Guide. This section focuses on His character and attributes.
Making Camp –  Is all about relationships. Getting to know fellow travelers, how to build strong relationships, as well as the importance of working together…
Detours and Roadblocks – In this world you will have trouble. This section addresses how to handle surprises, disappointments, and detours such as worry, fear, divorce, death, greed, pride, and temptation…
Souvenirs from the Journey – The final section looks at the rewards of Christian living, our call to share the gospel, how we are to set an example, and our continual growth in Christ.

I was very impressed by the depth of the content in each devotional. Even though the book tackles difficult topics, it does so in an approachable and age appropriate fashion. The most notable attribute would be through the use of stories and scenarios that begin each new lesson. Another positive attribute I found were the open ended, probing questions that ask children to draw upon personal experiences and biblical truths that they’ve learned in order to formulate a response. This goes far beyond the canned Sunday School responses that they may be accustomed to giving. On a final note, I would like to praise the author for including easy/affordable craft ideas, personal challenges, and challenges to complete as a family. This devotional is a good and wise investment.

  1. Thank you so much for your kind words about this devotional book. As a mom of four boys, my goal as I wrote this book was that families would enjoy and use together. You’ve encouraged me, and I greatly appreciate it!
